Do Colleges Pay Speakers?

I receive this question every week ... "Do colleges pay speakers?"

It's a great question and the answer will likely surprise you.

But first ... when I hear people say, "Colleges don't have any money. They don't book speakers," it reminds me that people who don't know what they are talking about should not be giving advice!

OUCH! I'm not normally that direct, but speaking is a business. And I treat my business very seriously. Why would I listen to someone and take their advice if they aren't full-time in the profession doing it? Part-time doesn't count.

If you want to get serious about having a speaking business, you need to mind your own business! Which means, you need to be mindful of where you get your advice from and what you know to be true. Otherwise, you'll be living in assumption-land which isn't a fun place to be.

When speakers reach out to me for questions, they have many pre-conceived notions. Often, I find myself shattering those beliefs because they are incorrect. They've "heard" from someone else who complained or couldn't figure it out.

In the case of speaking to colleges, ABSOLUTELY, COLLEGES DO PAY SPEAKERS ... and very well sometimes.

Now, "very well" is a relative term and amount. What might be "very well" to some of you might not be "very well" to others.

So if $3,500-$5,500 a speech isn't "very well" or at least "well" to you, then just stop reading this blog. Thanks for your time. Enjoy the mint julep in your suite at the Kentucky Derby. < sarcasm >

Speaking to college students not only pays well, but it's a noble cause. We are bettering our future generation and constructing their mindset for success.

The topics and challenges I address in my keynotes to professional audiences are not far different than they are to college audiences. Often, I wish I could have spoken to the professional groups much earlier in life so I could have helped them sooner!
