Tips for designing a professional Speaker 'One Page' (i.e. marketing flier or Speaker Packet)

If you don't have a One Page or Speaker Packet right this moment, that's OK. But know going forward that it's limiting your speaking. With the right marketing flier, you could be speaking so much more!

You don't even need to have presented a speech to create a Speaker One Page, so this cannot be your excuse.

Below I'm going to show you samples of mine and provide tips to keep in mind when designing yours or improving it.

But first, context ... from my experience, PAID speakers can be selected by a wide variety of different people -- meeting planners, conference organizers, executives, HR Directors, speakers agents, bureaus, campuses, student councils, school leadership, and many more.

It can be daunting to know so many folks make the decision to bring in a speaker. One thing remains constant ... they select "the ONE" speaker by ruling all other speakers out! Remember this.

A successful speaker, just like any successful (and happy!) business owner, must always reflect on how they can differentiate themselves and their business to stand OUT.

And if you're not positioning properly as a professional speaker, with both a great speech and the right materials, you're simply going to be looked over. This is why most speakers struggle ... they don't realize they are constantly being compared to others.

Having a great speech is a pre-requisite for any successful speaking business. The speaker is just the messenger. Nothing else matters if a speech needs work. It will never be referred or lead to spin-off inquiries if it's not educational, engaging and empowering (Module 1 - "3 E's").

If the speech isn't curated with the "3 E's", a great website doesn't matter. Neither does a demo video or a One Page.

I've written many blogs about how to design a great speech. Module 2 in my book, PAID to $PEAK, walks you through how to outline and storyboard a speech along with crafting a signature story.

So let's assume your speech is already pretty darn good and you receive referrals and spin-off inquiries every time you speak. Congratulations!

But you're still struggling for business when you make outreach? Or consistent PAID engagements don't seem to flow? You feel destined for more success but are not sure how to build or scale your business?

I hate prescribing a cure before accurately diagnosing, but from my experience, the common solution to these problems is likely in positioning and not having professional materials such as below:

  1. Speaker 'One Page' (also known as a marketing flier or Speaker Packet)

  2. Website

  3. Demo video

For the purposes of this blog post, we're going to focus only on Speaker One Pages, also known as marketing fliers or Speaker Packets. When I first started off speaking, I only had a 1-page marketing flier. Now, I have a Speaker Packet. Click here to view mine and take a look. I have a collegiate packet as well. Both packets also are in bureau-friendly format as well and you can view those below.

Remember, if you don't have what other speakers do have, you'll be looked over. So what's it costing you not having a One Page? And not just in $$$, but also in frustration and time wasted because you aren't positioning yourself properly.

General tips on creating a One Page:
  1. Study other speaker's samples (find them online and search)

  2. Expect to have a start-up version and grow into a more detailed version after getting more clients

  3. Don't design it yourself unless you are a professional graphic designer.

  4. Focus on content (i.e. copy text) first.

  5. Have your text edited and ready, as if you're comfortable inking it on your arm as a tattoo!

  6. Make your content universal so a variety of audiences find appeal and relevancy.

  7. Create two versions -- a standard version and a bureau-friendly version. Bureaus will not send our a standard version ad risk being bypassed for the contract.

  8. List 3 speaker options ... see my Speaker Packet sample on page 4

  9. Be clear on your call to action. What do you want the viewer to do?

  10. Align design style with your website and any other branding

Needed elements in a One Page:
  1. Headshot or 3 (different images)

  2. Action photos *

  3. Branding - logo, coloring and overall style fits you

  4. Testimonials *

  5. Bio - about the speaker (< 100 words)

  6. Sample clients (logo collage) * - whether you've been paid by them or not, they were a client

  7. Sample presentation topics

  8. Sample presentation titles (no more than 4) - Module 2 in PAID to $PEAK

  9. Program descriptions for each title (strive for 50-75 words max - more info on your website) - Module 2 in PAID to $PEAK

  10. Call to action -- what do you want them to do? (visit your website? watch your demo video? email you? submit on your website?)

  11. List speaker options ... see my Speaker Packet sample on page 4

* Speak to get these items!!

Once you have the elements ready, who designs it?

Don't design it yourself ... it'll show, respectfully.

Find someone who does this professionally and pay them. Your first speaking engagement will pay for it 10x over and you'll have it for at least 2-3 years in the future to earn so many more PAID speaking engagements. Again, what's it costing you NOT having a professional One Page? (answer: a LOT in time, money and frustration!)

The graphic designer team I work with is amazing! I worked with several different designers before finally meeting them! You can view their samples at: https://www.5lakesdesign.com/

However, the design team I work with are not taking on new clients who are not ready. If I refer you to them, they know you are ready for design because I've already worked with you to review your elements. In just 1 or 2 coaching sessions, I'll review all your work and provide feedback to solidify everything you need. Then you'll be ready and I'll make the introduction. You can also find a designer on Fiverr.com. Similar to UpWork, Fiverr is a platform where you can find people from all over the world who can help you with practically anything. Here's a link to learn more about Fiverr AND receive a discount!

** Caution about Fiverr ... because you very likely will be working with someone in another country, you must be VERY specific on exactly the vision you have for the end product.

Fiverr might be more affordable in the short run and get you a One Page for <$100, but it might cost you thousands in the long run! It depends on the end product. Fiverr can deliver well, but you'll need to be very specific.

Kevin's Speaker Packet samples:
Bureau-friendly version (notice the difference?)

Below is one of my One page versions I did on my own back in 2015 .... eeekkk!!! Can't you tell? :)

At the time, I thought it was OK and I spent 10+ hours creating it. Ouch!

Now compare that above version to the version below which my designer created ... and below is just the 1st page!

Click here or the image to view my entire Speaker Packet.

Below is my "Bureau-friendly" version which removes all my contact information. This is what bureaus and many speaker agents need when pitching me as a speaker. What do you notice differently?

If you don't have a bureau-friendly version, you will have less likelihood of being referred by a meeting planner or bureau! Click here or the image below to view my entire bureau-friendly version.

And below is a sample of one of my student marketing fliers from CAMPUSPEAK ... click this link to see the entire flier or the image below.

I sincerely hope these samples, tips and design elements equip and motivate you to either get your One Page done OR improve it to the next professional level! I'm here to help if you're willing to take A.C.T.ion.
