From Amateur to Professional: My Virtual Studio Journey
During the 2020 pandemic, my speaking business changed overnight -- all my in-person engagements for that year were canceled.
Like many speakers, I initially struggled with virtual presentations. My lighting, background, camera angles, and overall setup were far from professional!
But I realized something important: If I wanted to compete for virtual speaking engagements, I needed to LOOK and PRESENT like a professional.
This was the best I knew how to do. Looking back on it now, I'm embarrassed. If only I had taken action sooner to level UP my virtual presence, my speaking business (both virtually and in-person) would have rebounded more quickly and been resilient.
I just didn't have any experience in virtual world. In fact I never even had a Zoom account until 2020!
Then I woke up to the reality that virtual events were not going to disappear. In fact, they were going to remain after the pandemic was gone and provide an additional opportunity and revenue stream for my virtual presentations and workshops!
I also framed what I needed to do to improve my virtual presence was just a learning curve. It would not be overnight. I had to "walk my talk" and have a growth mindset like I share in my keynotes!
So I began studying other virtual studio set ups and hired a virtual studio coach, following their step-by-step advice to start building my home virtual studio. I frame knowing it was an investment in my business ... and my family's future. I had sat around complaining long enough!
I 'persuaded and negotiated' with my wife to convert one corner of our room into a dedicated space for my virtual studio.
My first DIY shiplap backdrop cost less than $250 and took about five hours to build. I started with one camera, then added professional lighting, audio, multiple camera angles, and an ATEM Mini video switcher.
I wanted a backdrop that was unique, clean and simple. To the right is one of my first videos I ever recorded in my home studio. At the time, I only had one camera angle.
After a few weeks, I then grew into another camera angle and upgraded to an ATEM switcher. Then I had multi-view camera angles which would become a game changer for me!
I started recording short videos clipping content from my "ShiftThinker" keynote. All I did was post those on Youtube and social media like throwing spaghetti on the wall.
The Result?
I landed a $7,500 virtual training series contract near immediately which paid for my studio investment! Then I landed another virtual speaking agreement. Then a hybrid speaking agreement ... and another!
The meeting planners and executives and schools would consistently tell me I had the best setup of all the speakers they were considering. Still to this day, my virtual studio continues to help me secure additional virtual AND in-person speaking engagements.
I also recorded two audiobooks with my studio microphone! I did not need to pay $2,500+ to go into a studio because I already have a studio environment with the technology!
What took me nearly two isolating and frustrating months to figure out, I can now help you accomplish in a fraction of the time! I also can provide you with an equipment list itemizing everything you need!
Rarely does a virtual presentation go by without someone asking about my studio setup, equipment, lighting, or how I created it!
