Should I speak for FREE?

"Should I speak for free?"

This is one of the most common questions I receive on my coaching calls and in emails from aspiring speakers who desire to build a speaking business.

The answer depends on several criteria, and I outline these circumstances in great detail within Module 4 of my book, PAID to SPEAK.

If those criteria are met, then "YES," you not only should speak, but you better speak, because you can glean crucial elements needed to build your speaking business!

"If the first one is FREE, then the second has the FEE!"

If you do decide to speak for free, there are certain conditions to be met by the meeting planner/event organizer booking you to speak ... again see Module 4.

Whether you speak for free or not, every speech builds on itself and can provide the following:

* video

* testimonials

* on-stage experience

* industry knowledge

* building your list

* sell books

* adding to your client summary

* ... and if your speech is good enough, you should get referrals!

If you don't have these items above, how can you get them?

You must SPEAK to get them ... and speaking for free is the easiest and most quick way.

So did I speak for free when I first got started speaking?

Absolutely ...

Do I speak for free now?

Rarely ... but I'll only consider doing this if my criteria are met. My decision to speak, whether PAID or not, is always strategic because running a business has to be that way. Agree?

In fact, if you read the Preface in my book, then you'll know I spoke for free almost entirely when I started speaking. The first time I got PAID to SPEAK was when they asked me how much my fee was!

When I look back on it now, what took me a few years should only take you a few months if you follow the system I recommend in my book.

Regardless of how long it takes, every speech should help you build your business if you approach it correctly and get what you need from it.

You just have to know what that is!
