Three BIG questions that will improve any presentation!

When I first started speaking, I just spoke. I didn't realize there was so much more to it.

I didn't have a signature presentation. I didn't know how to outline a speech. Heck, I didn't know how to even engage with an audience of 5 let alone 500 or 5,000.

I had no clue that really successful speakers, like Zig Ziglar - one of my mentor speakers - were so darn good on stage because they knew how to craft a speech that was so good.

They were incredible speakers because they did three things really, really well. And as I've gone full-time into speaking, I've discovered what these three "things" are.

And as I share them with you, I'll pose them to you as a question, because if you can't answer them, then I'd recommend you reflect on them until you can. The impact of your next presentation will rely on it!

These questions will make the difference between a struggling speaker and a successful speaker. With every single speech I make, I ask myself these three questions.

And whether you want to be a professional speaker or not - or whether you're more of a trainer, a teacher, a seminar facilitator, or a Toastmaster - these questions will help anyone making a presentation be more impactful, more relevant, and more engaging with whoever is listening.

So think ahead to your next presentation - envision yourself on stage in the future - and ask yourself these following questions to help you maximize the impact and value of your speech.

Question #1

What problem am I helping others solve?

As speakers - or presenters in any fashion - we're never hired to speak. We're hired to share our expertise that will help an audience solve a specific, or series, or problems. It ain't about us. It's about the value we're bringing to others through our stories and our content. Make sense?

Question #2

What makes me different as compared to 20 other speakers on the same topic?

Knowing the answer to this question is essential. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of other speakers that can speak on your same topic. But there's only one you. How are you different? Is it your story? Is it your content? Is it your delivery style? A combination of all the above? What makes you different is how you'll be remembered. Be different. And be so freakin' good that they can't forget you. (The comedian Steve Martin said that years ago!)

Question #3

What is my Call to Action?

This is by far where most speakers fall painfully short. What do you want your audiences to do differently as a result of hearing your presentation? Your Call to Action is what must clearly inspire others to do as a result of listening to you. Most speakers I see do not have a clear Call to Action - or any at all.

So how are you feeling? Can you answer questions #1 - #3?

Just asking yourself these questions is a positive start. But you have to answer them before your next speech. Otherwise, respectfully, you'll be leaving opportunity on the field.

And if you're an aspiring or current professional speaker, that means you're leaving value and future business on the field for someone else to pick up.
